Who/what is ‘apertje’?

15 10 2012

It has been brought to my attention that having a section on this blog to write about my experiences with ‘apertje’ might not be such a bad idea. As it was put to me, “it’s a great space to write about stuff in a more reflective way” (thank you Helen :-)). So, although I would like to (and still plan to) use Tumblr as my main blogging platform for ‘apertje’, I will also post information about it here, but in a much less promotional/image-based way. 😛

So, let me continue by explaining exactly who/what ‘apertje’ is…

Simply put, ‘apertje’ is me. It is the alias under which I create and produce the majority of my electronic music. It’s pronounced similarly to the word ‘aperture’ (yes I am a fan of Portal, although this is not my only reason for using it), however the last syllable (-ture) is replaced with a Dutch diminutive (-tje), in order to shorten the word slightly and also soften its pronunciation.

I have only been using the name ‘apertje’ for a few months; however I have been producing electronic music (mainly Electro House) for around a year and a half (I’ve been writing in other styles for much longer, but shan’t go in to that here). Before ‘apertje’, I was releasing tracks under my real name (Adam Pearman). Although I could have continued to use my real name, like many good producers/artists do, I have always felt a little bit uneasy about using it for such artistic ventures. I feel that having a unique name for my electronic music helps to separate it from the other styles of music that I choose to write in, as well as the studio based work I might do for other bands/artists. Most importantly of all, I feel that my usage of ‘apertje’ is much more than just a name, it’s a brand.

Anyway, I could go on for ages talking about ‘apertje’; what I’ve achieved so far, what I intend to achieve in the future, etc. However, I feel like I should end this here (as it’s getting on a bit) and perhaps continue with these topics in a future post. Thank you for your time, and hopefully you have learnt a little bit more about me as ‘apertje’. If you have any questions then please feel free to leave them in the comments below.

Cheers for this Adam, it’s great to learn more about what you do – and also how to pronounce ‘apertje’ tbh 😉
It could be interesting to see how this blog develops over time, alongside your Tumblr. Quite fascinating from an identity perspective…
